Well, since I've been doing mostly drawing lately for my class, thought I would post one. Not many details in these yet, but she looks like a human female right! My first male drawings looked like Sasquatch without the hair! LOL! I'll no doubt cringe at this as I get better, but we all start out this way right!

The palette knife....

If you look closely at my work, you'll see that most of these little paintings are done with the palette knife. I basically block in the blue sky and the grey/green for the land mass with a filbert, then I'm using the knife the rest of the time. Oils blend so beautifully, even with the knife.

While I'm here in Florida, and away from my usual studio in KY, I sometimes have to "make" myself paint. Now don't get me wrong...I love painting but I'm in much smaller quarters here and the sun beckons me to ride my bike, go for jogs, or layout almost every day!!!! (For those of you up north...yes, I can imagine your eyes are rolling.) On top of that, I can't leave my workstation/paint/paintings set-up. It can be difficult to drag everything out, then put everything up, verses having a couple easels and full length tables set up and ready to go at all times. Believe it or not...that's the bigger problem than all this beautiful weather. I miss my studio. I did however have a great painting session a day or so ago. Can't wait to share those with all of you!

Choosing paints

Many of you ask me what my favorite brand of oil paint is. Mostly I use Gamblin oils. I love, love, LOVE the creamy consistency, they are high quality, and they are so affordable. Do I have other brands in my oil box. You bet. Will I try other brands. Absolutely. I'm thinking of adding Vasari to my palette this year as a matter of fact.

Today was gorgeous! After prepping some canvas at the von Liebig for my upcoming classes, we (my guy and me) spent the rest of the afternoon on the bike. I definitely burned some calories...though we stopped at Ben & Jerrys for a scoop of some "strawberry cheesecake" ice cream. (So much for those calories burned!!!)

I've been working on my new years goals this month. I take the month of January to go over my numbers, look at what I completed last year, and think about where I want to go this year with my work. It's been fun. I sort of write down everything in a notebook, then give it more serious thought once I think I've scribbled everything down. I recommend setting at least some goals to everyone. Even if they're small ones.

Quickie Sketches....

Ever do 5 minute quickie sketches? I totally recommend it, especially if you don't particularly like drawing. Believe it or not, these short sketches WILL make you a better artist, they don't take long, and they are instant gratification. I had fun doing these seashells. I've got some seashells in an upcoming still life, and small sketches like these help me before I put them in a painting.

Some paintings I use the knife more than others. When I first started working with oils, I hated the palette knife. Now I enjoy the texture it creates. This little painting definitely has a lot of knife work.

Update on Skye

Some of you may know that we have reduced our herd over the years. One of our little guy's (not so little anymore), now named Skye, is doing great with his new momma. She's been keeping me posted on his progress and here's a couple of photos of him. He's doing great! I also got the good news that Skye's new momma Amy is going to be a momma herself! She's having a girl! I told her we need more little cowgirls in this world!!! Congratulations Amy!!!

Well, we're here in Sunny (but a bit chilly today) Florida! I'm so excited about painting down here the next few months and I'm already loving the weather! I ended up breaking my phone yesterday on my second run (more like jog for me!) of the year. Funny, I don't mind running when I first get down here. I'm so excited about the warm air, its fun to exercise!!!

This is another little still life from December 2011. I did this one from a photo. It was harder than I thought it would be because I usually have a photo and the actual still life right in front of me. It presents a challenge when you only work from pictures.

Well, I know it's been forever since I posted. I kept meaning to get back here to say that I'd be too busy to post for a while. I guess I was too busy to do that!!! Here's my latest still life that I've just completed. (20 x 20 inches) I'm always picking up rocks or feathers, "treasures" as I call them when I'm outside. Those of you who have hiked with me know how I can slow us down! LOL! Anyway, it's fun for me to put these little "treasures" in my paintings.

I may not post much thru the end of the year, but once I'm back in Florida, will pick back up. I'll try to get my ebay line going again after the first of the year as well (for my faithful collectors!) Thanks everyone!!!

Here's a few paintings I just finished on the drying shelves (8 x 10's). I found this Native American pot at a thrift store for like a $1.00. It has a chip in the rim, but I just paint it out. I looked up the signature on the bottom and it's signed (I think) Gerie Vail. Evidently the Vail family does a lot of horsehair pottery. One thing that was interesting while painting it, was that it wasn't completely symmetrical. At first I was going to correct it, but then thought better of it. I think it adds to the charm of the pot.

Cars....

Well, I found out officially that my little car has developed an oil leak. It started out about a month ago...just a small drop on the concrete. The drop has gotten larger, which means the leak is getting worse. I love my car. It's a 2002 Miata and is probably the first car I ever bought and picked out on my own (with no husbands, or Dads, or anyone telling me what I should buy). Is my car practical? Nope. Can I haul lots of art supplies in it? Nope. In fact, I have to put the top down to get large canvas in the front seat. Will I be upset when I have to let this car go eventually? Yep! I'm hoping my little oil leak won't be too expensive to fix and is nothing serious.

Favorite Things...

I went with my Mom several weeks ago to one of the local antique shows and I bought these sweet little handkerchiefs. I've always thought they were pretty and my Grandmother would sometimes let me carry one of hers in my purse when I was a little girl. Now, granted I never use them...(I'm a kleenex girl!!) but I just love the delicate little patterns on them so I've been putting them in my still life work. Being an artist gives me a bit of an excuse to keep useless little things around just because I like them.

Well, I'm starting to get caught back up again and I'm very glad to be back blogging! School is keeping me busy and my daughter's wedding is only about 7 weeks away, painting is officially my new favorite stress reliever. I've got several still life paintings I've been working on and I'm trying to take some work in progress photos of them. So, be looking for me to post them pretty soon. Terrible news...

A good friend of mine died this week. Bobby Martin. He and his wife have been very good friends of mine for too many years to count. It was sudden to say the least. He's only like 41 years old and had symptoms of a heart attack. They've done an autopsy, but still can't find out why it happened. We'll know more in the weeks to come when lab work is complete. I just can't believe it! I've heard of and prayed for other families who have had something like this happen...you never think it will be you. Please send your hugs and prayers to his family and those of us who were lucky enough to call him friend.

Cleaning brushes....

Being excited about getting paint out of brushes may be boring to most, but when they are such an integral part of your work, it's important. I just learned a new way to get dried paint out of my bristle brushes. If you put them in rubbing alcohol for a bit, it seems to break the dried paint up and then you can clean them like normal. I did not know this until this past week. I currently use Masters brush cleaner, or some sort of liquid soap to clean my brushes, then hair conditioner (usually the kind that comes free with my hair color!!) to keep them soft. That has always worked, but I still would get a build up of dried paint up by the metal part of my brush. This method seems to break it down and my brushes don't appear to be damaged. I learned this in school this week.

Well...the new semester has started for me and I'm back in the swing of things. (Or at least I'm fooling myself into thinking I am!!) I've just started my first painting for still life, and so far so good in my design class with my homework there too. This little Hull Vase painting is from some homework from last year. I don't know why I like putting antiques in still lifes, but I do. This vase isn't worth a tremendous amount of money, but I like it because it's old. I always wonder what the previous owners did with it. Was it for flowers, for sitting on a shelf, or maybe a gift? There's something cool about finding these little treasures with a bit of history in them. I expect to have a lot of my favorite antiques in my studio work this year.

Kentucky State Fair...

We went to the Kentucky State Fair yesterday and had a great time. Mostly I like to check out the art and the quilts. There was some beautiful artwork and amazing quilts!!! We also went for some of the free health screenings. The one I was really interested in was the pre-screening for skin cancer. I'm good to go, but my guy needs to go in and have a few things removed. Nothing serious thankfully. How cool was it that we could just go in and do that though!! They had free eye, hearing, & skin cancer screenings and you could even get a mammogram for a reduced price. We also sampled lots of goodies, (mostly dips and ice creams) and of course stopped the the ugliest lamp competition. Who knew there were two identical Elvis lamps still out there! LOL! Fun day!

Nibblefest on ebay...

Here's my Nibblefest entry on ebay for this month..(ebay search NFAC..this month's them was "On The Farm"). This was done plein air in Bracken County. I had told some of the folks at EBSQ that I had several little jumping bugs commit suicide on my painting while I was painting it. This painting session, I forgot to bring my chair. No biggie (I thought) because I had a quilt with me. So I picked a spot under a shade tree between the horse fence and the tobacco field (there's a tractor path there). I guess because I was so low to the ground every little jumping bug seemed to make it into my paint, on the canvas, on me, in my bag...it was very frustrating. I doubt that I'll forget my chair again!! I like to sit in one shaded spot and just move my chair vantage and paint. I don't like my plein air easel so I didn't bring it. I just hold the painting in my hand and I have an Artbin travel bag that housed my paint/solvents etc. When I get the money, (hopefully soon!) I'll be getting a Guerrilla Pochade box. I already have it picked out waiting in a cart online. Anyway, I smoothed the bugs out and this painting is what I was left with. I do love it out there...bugs and all!

Cleaning up...

I love using oil paints, but they are such a pain to clean up. I guess I'm just griping because I've been condensing thinner and filling up old containers with cat litter for disposal today. That was after I did some TLC to some of my brushes, scraped off palettes, and gave permanent "burials" to the bowls that I use for my mediums. (Sigh) I know I shouldn't complain, but sometimes I miss acrylics. I'll be using gouache for the first time this semester in school and I'm looking forward to trying this new medium. I'm still not sure why its called "Designers" Gouache. Anyone know why "designers" is in the name? Just wondering.

Every barn needs a cat....

Yep, every barn needs a barn cat. This is Kitty. (Original name right...I didn't name him!) He's my boyfriends cat and he is the sweetest little thing you'd ever meet...unless you're a mouse or a bird. I call him our little carnivore because despite the fact that I try to keep him full of kitty food, he still likes to hunt. I'm grateful for his raids on the barn getting rid our our unwanted rodents, but I always regret the little birds who fall prey to his hunting skills. Usually I never see them...just the pile of feathers he left behind. Cats must truly have 9 lives and Kitty has used up about 7 of his! He's been locked in a trunk of a car and a shed in very, VERY hot weather (one he almost didn't survive). I've seen him nearly run over by a slow moving vehicle in the driveway....because for some reason, he doesn't feel HE should have to move even though he's no match for the truck or car he's in the path of, and I personally have accidentally locked him between the storm door and front door (couldn't be more than 4 inches wide!) for several hours, until I heard a sort of "scuffling movement" and realized he had somehow gotten in there after I closed the main door and before the storm door shut. No meowing...just a scuffling noise where I guess he was switching positions! Thankfully I heard it! I just love Kitty and hope we have many more years with him.

Body of Work...

I've been spending time this year trying to get scholarships and grants to help pay for college. It's soooo expensive! I so wish I had just finished when I was younger and tuition was about 1/3 the cost it is now. Hind site is always 20/20 though. Anyway, many of the grant programs want to see a body of work from your portfolio that that shows your innovation in style and concept, technical proficiency, consistency etc. Which is all well and good, but part of why I'm continuing my education is so that I may develop all of those things further. It can be discouraging, though it hasn't stopped me from applying. My paintings are selfish. When I'm someplace that moves me, I want to stop time and hold on to that moment. Since I can't stop time, I capture it with a painting then I can re-visit it whenever I choose. I wish I had something more profound to say as to why I paint the things I do, but that is the honest truth.

Missy and Storm

I don't really have anything to talk about today, so thought I would post another photo of a couple of our horses. This is Missy (back) and Storm (towards the front). Missy is the horse that kicked me a couple of years ago. She's a sweet, sweet horse and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We had another colt in the field and while I was giving her some treats, he started approaching. (I wasn't paying attention.) I moved just a bit in the wrong direction (in his direction) and she got me instead of him. I still have a bit of a "dent" in my leg from some scar tissue. I guess it was bound to happen sometime, though I would never have thought it would have been her to do it. I pay more attention when I've got the grain or the apples out now.

I'm going to start listing some of these little 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch paintings (now that they are dry enough). Most are plein air and I like them because when I'm outside, I can just hold them in my hand and paint. This one is on unstretched canvas, but most I have are stretched canvas on these cute little stretcher bars. The biggest problem I can see with them is they look better in person than the scan. My naked eye doesn't see that close up, but my scanner gets every detail!!

We're just about to beat the record for over 90 degree days here in Northern KY. I can't stand being outside in this and have been doing most of my painting in the studio. Basically, we get up early and walk about 5 miles, I run errands, then the bulk of my day is inside. What did people do in the old days before air conditioning! I have been re-evaluating my plein air easel. Mine's a big old heavy clunky french style. I'm dumping that for a Guerrilla thumb box or something small like it. The thumb box may be a bit too small for me I think, but I'm definitely downsizing. I learned that in this hot weather. I hope your weather is behaving better than ours!!!

This week, a few of us friends from church are going to help one of the local widows with some yardwork. I think it's so important to volunteer or help out a neighbor, our seniors, even our kids. Do I like yard work...no way. Will it be hard, absolutely. Will I do this work with joy in my heart...you bet. I hope if I'm ever in need someone will step up and help me out, even if they have nothing to gain. Not only does it benefit the person you're helping out, it sets a good example for the young people coming up after us. I hope all of you have had a chance to get the blessings of volunteer work!

Clouds this year....

You may have noticed that I've got several cloud paintings this year. I just LOVE painting clouds and the late spring, early summer paintings have a ton of them. If I could only choose one thing to paint, I think I would choose early morning, or evening clouds. You never know what you're going to get and I'm never disappointed.

We had our local county fair this week and we had beautiful weather! I entered a painting and got a blue ribbon (wehoo!) and got to watch some trucks play tug of war, some horses show off, and hang with my guy. Fun time! Plus I've been painting like crazy! Computers...

It still amazes me how much time I have to spend on the computer. Today, I got changed into my "painting clothes" (clothes I've already ruined with paint) expecting to get to work after I got done on the computer. Well...I've been on here all day and haven't touched a paint brush. Granted, I had to spend quite a bit of time working on some photos that have to be sent away for a scholarship I'm applying for, but some days it seems like I have to force myself to stay off this thing. My computer is a valuable tool, but I'm looking forward to diving into more painting tomorrow. Wouldn't it be nice if all I had to do was just paint.......(sigh). Oh well, back to reality!

Storm...

This is my two year old horse Storm. He was born here on our farm was a bit of a surprise. We purchased some broke female horses from a very nice gentleman up in Ohio. He neglected to mention that one of them was pregnant. The first time we came across our little surprise in the field, one of those quickie thunderstorms we get around here blew in. I've called him Storm ever since. He got a saddle put on his back for the first time this week and did famously well! I think he's just gorgeous, but I'm a bit biased!

Well, for those of you who don't know Nibblefest is a little contest on ebay where a few of us artists start our listing at $0.99 and see who gets the most "nibbles" or bids on our artwork. If you want to check it out for yourself, just go to ebay and search NFAC. The contest starts on the 20th of the month and ends on the 27th. There's a different theme each month and this month's is "things on wheels". I've been wanting to do a vintage car or truck for fun, so this seemed to be the time. I'm getting mine it late so it won't start until tomorrow morning early. On another note I survived my root canal! (So far anyway!) I'm up and about...Wehoo!!!

Well, this week is "root canal week". I'm getting it done on Wednesday. Everyone keeps telling me it won't be bad...I'm hoping they're right! So today and tomorrow are mostly going to be me trying to get everything caught up for the week. I've also been trying to get more organized with some of my filing. I've not got a binder for school scholarships organized by date, and I'm starting one for upcoming art shows that I may want to submit too. For some of you, that may not seem like a big deal, but my last filing system for this was a box on a book shelf. I don't know why, but I'm inspired to paint more when things are organized around here.

This week is Vacation Bible School at my church, and I'm helping. I'm in the snack area and today was blue snow cone day!! I don't know why it is that children love those things. Syrup poured over crushed ice doesn't really do anything for me but when the kids see that's what the snack of the day is, they are so happy!! Maybe it's the blue color, maybe it's the sugar, or maybe it's just that it's not something they would normally get at home. Whatever the reason, we had about 150 kids all leaving today with blue lips, teeth, and tongues. I heard one of the little boys telling another child that "this smurf juice must be permanent". I didn't realize that kids this young even knew what smurfs were, but I guess they do. My "baby" is in her twenties, so I'm out of the loop.

I don't talk much about my still life work here because I link this to my ebay account where I sell my little landscapes. However, I've had a trying week due to a bad tooth (I'm scheduled for a root canal...yikes!!). I don't have much to say because I'm a bit behind. So thought I would post this little cup and saucer. Live and Learn....

If you read my last post, you know about the gridlines I draw on the canvas to help me get proportions right when I paint. I used what I thought was a watercolor pencil for this drawing. Turns out it was a regular colored pencil and the pink marks are bleeding thru. I've posted the photo of my gray "block in" phase where I first noticed them (24 x 36 inch canvas/oil). I started putting some color in the sky and the pink lines weren't there at first. The next day, they bled thru much brighter. You may or may not be able to see them on the close ups I posted. So...I guess I'll be starting over with this one. All I had done was the drawing and blocking in. So, it could have been worse. Lesson learned....pay attention to what you use to draw in your paintings!!! I can't believe I used a regular colored pencil instead of the watercolor one. I hope all of you are having a better week!!!

A little problem...

Today I ran into a little situation. I'm working on a large 24 x 36 inch painting of the Grand Canyon. Now my larger works are much more detailed than these little ebay paintings I post here. To get the details right, I grid them out when I'm working from my photo references...(which I am in this case since I live in Ky). Anyway, I usually use a watercolor pencil to make the grid so that as I paint, my lines sort of disappear. Well, I guess I used a regular colored pencil and the bright pink grid lines are showing through! Yikes! I'm hoping that the successive layers will cover them up, but they seem to be bleeding thru the paint. I may have to start over. Always something right! I need the practice I guess!

Pushing yourself...

I was so relieved when this semester ended. It just felt good to not have any deadlines looming over me. And yes, that what deadlines feel like to me. Problem is as an artist, you have to meet deadlines. So....I got my week off and now I've got my daily goal list back out. Today's was longer than my daytimer had lines, but I didn't mind. I know by pushing myself, I'm moving my career forward and it feels good.

Am I the only one who can't believe it's May 23rd?! I'm not complaining, I'm just surprised! I'm glad finals are over (A- on my still life...yeah!), I had a crazy busy week last week and I survived, and my daughter had surgery today and came thru with flying colors. (Thank you Lord!!) So, yes, I'm glad to be starting out a new week, but I can't believe it's nearly June!! Everyone says times seems to go faster as you get older. I guess they're right! Happy Monday everyone!!

What's with the weather...

In a couple of weeks, the pools usually open around here. The last few days...and the rest of the week, the highs are only going to be in the 50's! Norms are in the 70's! Crazy! Plus, I now have a nasty cold, (and cold's make me grumpy!). I need some sun!!! Ok, there's my complaint of the day (and week). Good news is, I now have a new SLR Nikon digital camera with a macro and zoom lens. I've no idea how to operate it yet, but I have managed to take photos and get them on my laptop. Baby steps right! I can't wait to get out and start playing with my new toy!

This is Casey, one of our riding horses. In this photo, she's not interested in me...she looking to see what's in the little black buckets that we put their grain in. Since we've had a bit of dry weather (soon to end) I've been able to go spend some time with our horses. Casey's getting a new halter, a nice bright green one. She's a good riding horse, but isn't fond of leaving our fields. She likes it at home where she feels safe I guess. I'm that way too for that matter!

Art Organizations...

There are so many art organizations out there. I've been pondering joining a couple of new ones this year. I can't believe how many there are! My plan right now is to join a new local one, another that could help further my career, and another "local" one for the area we winter in down in Florida. I wish I could sign up for more, but the expense can be too much. One thing about me, if I don't feel that I'm getting anything from my membership, or contributing to the organization, I'll move on. I would love to hear any suggestions from you. I'm a lifetime member of EBSQ, and that won't change, however if you have a recommendation, I would love to hear it!

Sun Finally!!!

I didn't think the rain was ever going to stop! We thankfully have had a couple of dry days. This morning, I finally got to go hang out with some of our horses and after my work in the studio today, I'm planning on spending some more time with them. The horse in this photo, I just call "Stud". He's definitely a "pretty boy". The first time I met him, he had never let anyone touch him. Ever! He was about 3 or 4 years old and he came right up to me and let me scratch his neck. I thought he had always liked people, but it turns out I was the first he trusted enough to get close to. He'll no doubt end up in a painting and this photo may be one I use for reference.

It has been raining like crazy here! I think we're like 11 inches ABOVE normal. It's a good time for some still life work. I totally have a thing for clouds. Even before I knew I wanted to be an artist/painter I loved dramatic clouds and I would just stare at them. Watching them change and contort, and the way they reflect the light mesmerizes me. I'll be exploring them further with my paintings this year and I'm pretty excited about that. Some organization...for now

A few of you have asked me about my workspace. Well, since I just got it a bit straightened up, here it is! I have a seating area with a tv, where I do my reading/chilling when I need to. The two easels usually have something on them so I can go back and forth as I feel so led. You can also see my drying shelves are everywhere! I generally use tape to mark the completion date so I know when it's ok to apply re-touch varnish before selling. What's also nice is that the table you see is set up all the time, but I can move the wooden easel over and set up another table for workspace if I need it. It's all pretty convertible and functional. You may also notice my stair machine under the table. It gets used, but not as much as I'd like!!! LOL!

I've already completed a painting since I've been home, but decided to do a studio "cleaning" session. I'm re-organizing, and throwing out as much as possible. I liked pretty much how I had things set up, but wanted to move a few things around. It seems like each year, I make this place a better workspace. Clutter distracts and discourages me, so I'm getting rid of more of it. I've found as I get older, it's easier to part with things too. Simpler is sometimes better.

I've really been exploring doing more studio still lifes. Now I'm torn because I like the control I have working in the studio. That may sound weird, but I do. However, I love the outdoors and I'm drawn to painting what I love there also. I think this year is sort of going to be a pivotal year for me with my work. I'm not sure if I'm at a crossroads, or if I'm just in for some serious refinement. I know many of you are going thru, or have gone thru this. I'm excited about it, but a part of me wants to jump to the end to see how it all turns out!!! Ok, so most folks visiting Florida aren't happy when it rains here. However, there has been a great lack of rain this winter. Brush fires and watering restrictions have been in the news every night. We watched the clouds move in this evening, and I got to enjoy the storm move in. (One of my favorite things to watch.) Of course, this painting has nothing to do with that. Thank you so much everyone for your concerns about the car wreck. We're hanging in there. I've got a really nasty bruise on my arm, but it is getting better! I've been feeling some pain on one side of my neck, but I'm hoping that will go a way in the next week.

This little painting makes me a bit homesick for Kentucky. Just a couple more weeks, then we'll be back! You wouldn't think it, but there are many of these little vistas that can be seen as you drive in Southern Kenton County. I can't wait to put the top down on my Miata and soak in some of the spring countryside again!!!

Bad day....

Well, my day started out pretty great. We ran some errands that morning, then attended an art show with some very famous artist work (very cool). After that is when things took a bit of a bad turn. On the way back, we were involved in a car accident. We're all ok. In Florida, they have these little u-turn sections in the middle of US-41. Most people use them because Tamiami Trail can be 6 or 8 lanes across. Well, a lady, (trying to get to the mall!!!!!) decided to try to cut all the way across. She made it across the northbound traffic (we were heading south). We saw her and she looked like she was going to stop in the median section. Before she came to a complete stop, she decided she would gun across all four lanes and slammed right into the drivers side of our car. She said she didn't even see us. We think she was looking behind us trying to beat that traffic. The rest of the day was spent a the hospital and happily we're back home tonite. We didn't have the dog with us thankfully. Right now I've got a big knot on my arm and lots of advil in my body. What a day!!!!

What am I getting ready for? Well, in the next couple of weeks I'll be packing up to head back north to Kentucky. Before that, I've one more workshop to teach. It's hard to believe that I'll be leaving for Kentucky in a few weeks. Time just flies by down here and sometimes I have trouble keeping track of the days. It actually rained here today...something that was much needed here in Southern Florida. We hope to visit the Keys this week for some sightseeing, sketching, and sunsets. This little painting was done from up north where I hear they have about of foot of snow this week. (Lake effects.) It's hard for me to imagine sometimes being so far south most of the winter. Stay warm if you're up north!!!

Keeping it simple...

I have so loved my time here in Florida and though we won't be going home for another month, I'm already thinking about how I'll be spending my time at home. Problem is, I have more ways to spend my time, than time. I'm really going to try to focus more this year on organizing my time better. Honestly, I would just work (paint) all the time...every day. (I certainly wasn't that way when I worked in an office!) Those of you who are artists I'm sure can relate. This painting kind of makes me think of that. Many times when I set out to get prelim sketches, I'm sort of scouting/working. Here, I stopped and just sat there for a while. Really enjoyed the place. It may be hard to believe, but I need to allow myself to do that more. I'm so concerned with sharing the spot with others, I forget to really enjoy it myself.

This painting named "A Golden Year" is so named because of how yellow the field happened to look the day I was there. Next year, on or around the same day, it will look totally different. The name also talks about my year in general. I've really enjoyed teaching my oil painting classes, I've grown so much as an artist thru school and pushing my own boundaries, and my personal life is quite happy right now. I'm not one of those artists who does her best work when she's under duress. I like it when things are happy....the skies are blue...the birds are singing...

Ohio River Valley

This painting is from one of my hikes in Southeast Ohio. When I think of Ohio, I think "FLAT". The Ohio river and Licking Rivers have carved out much of our countryside where I'm at in Northern Ky. However, when you cross over to the Ohio side, there are some beautiful rolling hills and valleys. It's very surprising and the area reminds me of Kentucky. Great painting material!!!!

The Forever Field

This painting is of some of the gorgeous Kentucky countryside near my home. In the southern part of the county where I live, there is still a lot of open land. I called this piece the "Forever Field" because it seems as though you can see forever. I love the feeling I get looking at these large open spaces. I don't know why, but it causes me to contemplate my future and all it's possibilities.

I completed this painting back in Kentucky from some really, REALLY rough field sketches. South of me in the Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge area you can see views like this everywhere. I wish I had brought my sketches down here with me so you can see just how rough they are. I love to do really fast rough "thumbnail" or very small sketches on site/outdoors and then take photos. When I get back to the studio, it's so fun turning them into paintings. Believe it or not, the sketches help me remember the feeling of the moment just as well as the photo does. Maybe more so!

Working alone...

I don't know how many of you feel about this, but I prefer to work/create when I'm alone. I seem to get so much more accomplished that way. Now it could be that because I'm a bit of a "talker" (those of you who know me personally probably think that's an understatement!!), I don't get as much done because I'm chatting too much. I think that's part of it, but I also think that I don't like for people to see my "process". I prefer to only show my completed work. I used to hate in college when we had to work in class and I constantly had someone looking over my shoulder. I got around that by working very slow, then finishing up at home. I'm sure I didn't fool my professors, but no one called me out on it!

The other night I had such a great time with a couple of fellow artists. Noella Noel and Elizabeth Williams. Elizabeth has a wonderful gallery here in the heart of Naples, Florida and Noella has her own gallery up in Ontario Canada. Both are abstract artists and produce amazing work. I had such a nice time talking "art" and hanging with the girls a bit. I think it's always important to connect and network with other artists. Not just for the sake of your business...but sometimes for the sake of your sanity! It was fun, just have fun!!!

The paintings I have on ebay....

The paintings that I have for sale on ebay were completed weeks or even months ago. With oils, I have to wait quite a bit before I can list them for sale. My studio has rows of shelves that I use for viewing and drying wet paintings. Once I complete one of these little paintings, I put it on the shelf to dry (for at least 4-5 weeks). Next I apply a damar retouch varnish to seal it and then it's back to the shelf again. After that's dry, I photograph it and download the photo into a template. Eventually, I get it on ebay for YOU to give it a new home. I call these paintings my "little jewels". I just love the way they look when I put them in one of my favorite gilded frames. I hate to say it, but sometimes I have a hard time letting them go. I hope that each of you that have one of my "little jewels" loves it as much as I love painting them.

That pretty much sums up my day today. We ran errands this morning, went for a run, then came home for football playoffs. While the football was on, I got caught up on a bunch of my "web" work. It's been so nice most days I'm outside. It was gorgeous today too, but it was kinda nice to just take it easy. I think my run wore me out!!

I don't tend to get out and run much in the cold weather. However, here in sunny Florida, I have no excuse. Actually, I've been looking forward to getting out and running again. My guy and I have been doing about 3 mile runs about every other day. Needless to say, I'm paying for taking a couple of months off. I'm glad we're not tracking our times right now!!

To make resolusions, or not.....

I made some resolutions, (I prefer to call them goals), last year. I pretty much kept all of them. I wanted to start and post to a blog, paint some smaller affordable paintings for ebay, start teaching some oil painting classes, & research going back to school. I'm just now starting my list of goals for this year. One is to start a website for my classes and another is to read the Bible thru again. Our whole church is going to try that one. Plus I plan on working on some larger works. I've already started a few. I like to keep my goals for the year, sort of generic/general. Then as I start working on them, I break them down. It works for me. I hope each of you achieved some of your dreams and goals last year...AND...I hope you get started working toward this years!!

My hands are finally warm!!!

Florida is so lovely! It's not as warm as usual here, but they tell me tomorrow the temps will be back to normal (high 70's). Wehoo!

It's an understatement that most of my money is spent on art supplies. I had one small suitcase and my laptops. The rest of the car & trunk were packed to the gills with art supplies. It was really more than I would normally need, but I have a still life painting class I'm taking next semester and have no idea what I'll need...so I brought it all!!! Plus, I'm scheduled to teach some painting classes while I'm here. So you can imagine the supplies I needed for that as well. Packing the car was like putting together a complicated puzzle, but my guy did it! It is clear to me now why my wardrobe is lacking....I spend most of my money on oil paint, easels, paper, canvas, charcoal.....oh and the books/magazines....it's terrible!!! (And typical for me.) It just feels like home if I have my paints & brushes with me.

I can't wait to get my toes in warm sand. That being said, I am so behind as far as getting ready to go!! I love talking about going south for a while, but hate packing for it. I'll no doubt come home with some new paintings started, tons of photo refs for future work, and another semester under my belt. I'm getting fired up just talking about it....not enough to start packing though!! Ha!

Staying warm inside...

Oh...the weather outside is frightful...but my furnace is so delightful..... Ok, corny, but right now I'm loving being inside. The high temp today will be 29 degrees, with a "wintery mix". Translation, sleet, snow, very cold....stay inside! The good news is I'm getting some painting done today. Most of my time will be to finish a commission I have due before Christmas, and I like being ahead of schedule. Stay warm everyone!!!

Early Snow

It is snowing like crazy here. We knew it was coming, but it still seems a little early for us to have such low temps and this much snow. We've been about 30 degrees below normal here in Northern Ky. You would think it would inspire me to do some house cleaning/organizing etc. since I'm stuck inside. No such luck. Instead, I've been working on some larger works....beach scenes. I guess that's my way of dreaming of warmer weather!

Paying it Forward

I rarely give paintings away as gifts. Mainly because not everyone gets the thrill out of getting something handmade or original like I do. I think I'm going to give one of my paintings to an Aunt of mine though. When I was young, she always encouraged me to be creative and explore that side of me. I remember one year when I was into photography, she had me photograph all of the porcelain dolls she had made. Now, she could have done that herself, but she insisted on paying me to do it. I spent several hours putting my heart and soul into photographing those dolls in the most creative way I knew how. The photos were terrible, but you wouldn't have known that by my Aunt's reaction. She made over them as if a pro had done the work. It gave me confidence and was probably a stepping stone for me becoming an artist today. I try to encourage others, especially young people as much as possible. It's sort of a way to pay it forward from the wonderful people in my life who encouraged me.

Shakespeare's Sonnet...

I'm never sure what I'm going to write about here each time I make an entry. Earlier, my artist group EBSQ was asking for our opinions for 2011 shows. One of my suggestions was Shakespeare's Sonnets. So...thought I would share one of my favorites:

The Holidays...

I think I'm nearly done with my Christmas shopping. I have a few things to buy (and make) but I'm not doing too bad this year. It's amazing how it sneaks up on you. My favorite gifts (both for giving and receiving) are creative ones. There's something cool about getting something that has sentimental value. Just knowing that someone put a lot of thought into a gift that could be appreciated by you more than anyone else makes it even more special.

Thanksgiving

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving again this year. As usual I ate too much!! The photo is me and my guy over at my Mom & Dad's house. It's funny, we're a loud bunch...right down to my smallest niece. No quiet, restful dinners when our family gets together!! Tom has really had to get used to that, but he survived! I hope you got to spend time with loved ones this Thanksgiving holiday.

Friends

Most Sunday nights you can find me and my boyfriend over at one of our friends homes. We call it life groups, or Bible Study. We all meet at someones home, bring something yummy to eat, and dive into God's word. I can't tell you how much this time means to me. It's just the re-charge I need to get my week going and it's nice to just be able to kick back and be yourself.

What does this have to do with my art journey? Everything!! Our friends shape us more than we can ever imagine. Sometimes more than our own families.

Neighbors, local, or online, I hope everyone has the great support group of friends that I've been so blessed with.

This Week...

Well, I got my worst grade ever in my Analysis of Form class this week. I had it coming though. Not enough time put into my assignment and my professor knew it. That seems to be the theme this week....not enough time. I have some commission work due before Christmas, 2 painting classes I teach to plan for, and the general holiday stuff looming over my head like a dark cloud waiting to burst. Oh well...situation normal I guess!! At least our EBSQ site is working better since the upgrade and I was able to upload my new paintings for ebay. (That was number 153 on my list of things to do this week! Ha!)

EBSQ Self-Representing Artists

I'm a juried and lifetime member of EBSQ Self Representing Artists. Honestly without them, I don't believe I would have come this far as an artist. Now don't get me wrong, I feel that creating art is a journey. I don't think you "arrive", I think you constantly grow. However, the collaboration of other artists there, helped me not to be afraid of who I am. Their support, both with my business and art questions, has totally had a positive impact on my life and work. If you are creating art, join some sort of collaborative. You need people whom you can relate with and relay questions to.

Right now they have just updated the EBSQ web page. They're working on getting out all of the "bugs" and have been doing a fantastic job. I'm so thankful for places like EBSQ where artists like me can learn, grow, and even contribute.

Memories

This little painting is from memory. My Grandparents had a large farm that I roamed about on as a kid. Because Grandpa grew tobacco and harvested hay, there was always a tractor path at the edge of each field. I can't tell you how many times I was able to ride on the tractor with my Grandpa, or walked that path with their old dog Margo. It almost brings tears to my eyes now writing about it. I've passed that old farm many times in my car which now hosts a gorgeous home with the most beautiful horse barn I've ever seen. I'm so pleased that the new owners are preserving the land and running horses on it.

Daily Painting

It's funny how some days I have to force myself to get out the oils and get to work. Other days, I just can't wait. Today was one of those days. I've been doing mostly fall foliage from here at the farm. I did throw in a beach scene though. Maybe I'm so into painting today because I have homework to do!! My "Line & Form" class is strictly charcoal. I'm not really into black & white so I sometimes get to "craving" color after working on my school projects. OR...it could be that I just want to get out of working on my homework. After all, I like working on what I want to work on!!!!

Autumn

Well, the fall colors are in full swing all over the country. Here, because of the drought, we didn't have our usual fiery colored hillsides. It's still been pretty none the less.

Much of my time recently has been working on school projects and trying to keep up with my daily painting. I also help my boyfriend bring cars back (he has a small car lot) from different parts of the country. When I'm alone in the car on the road, much of my time is spent looking at the countryside, envisioning how I would paint it. It's the artist in me no doubt, but I can't help but to look for the purple in the trees.

Summer Moments

Right now, my horses are wishing they had thier summer fields back. Everything is so dry and brown around here in Kentucky. I guess I like painting these fleeting moments so I can go back and "re-visit" them whenever I please.

Though, me being one of those people who can see the good in things...it is nice to be so appreciated by my horses. I'm the "candy" lady now. They see me coming with the buckets of grain and some apples...I'm their new best friend!!!

Today I spent prepping my new planner and for the oil painting class I'm teaching in a couple days. After this weekend, I can relax again and go back to painting some more of my favorite places.
